International Jazz Day was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to draw attention to jazz and its capacity to diplomatically bring people from all over the world together.

International Jazz Day is coordinated and led by UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay and famous jazz pianist and composer Herbie Hancock, who is also a UNESCO Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue and Chairman of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz.
